If you have been reading the news lately and keeping up with latest trends, then you must have come across countless articles about companies introducing Electric Vehicles( EVs) one after the other. Some even committing to go all electric in the near future.
India, too, is following the trend with many automobile giants introducing more and more electric vehicles in anticipation of demand. With big players in the automobile industry, like Jaguar Land Rover and Mercedes, introducing a range of desirable electric vehicles and the confirmation of Tesla’s entry in the Indian market, it is almost inevitable to stop this incoming trend of EVs.
Part of this can also be blamed on the rising trend of fuel prices in the country. The growing interest of the public towards EVs is also the result of government subsidies and commitment of public and private companies towards building a framework for easy and accessible charging stations across the country. Delhi government has even planned to set up 100 charging points across the city, with a plan to set up a charging station after every kilometre in the next 2 years. Currently, 70 charging stations are present at various points and another 70 are coming up. 500 charging stations are planned to come up at over 100 points in the city in the next 2 years. The government has also offered subsidy up to Rs. 30000 on purchase of electric two-wheelers in the city. This is just the beginning of the shift to electric vehicles.
As per the words of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Road Transport and Highways Minister, “Phase-II of Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) Scheme is being implemented with a total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crore. This phase focusses on supporting electrification of public & shared transportation and aims to support, through subsidies, approx. 7000 e-Buses, 5 lakh e-3 Wheelers, 55000 e-4 Wheeler Passenger Cars and 10 lakh e-2 Wheelers.”
According to Sky News, “Jaguar Land Rover has committed to keep all three of its British plants open in the drive for all its models to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The major shift forms a key plank of the carmaker’s plan to become a net zero carbon business by 2030. The firm, owned by India’s Tata Motors, said the Jaguar brand will lead the way with a complete electric vehicle range by 2025.”
The UK is expected to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030. Supported by the fact that USA has become part of the Paris Climate Accords again, the threat of climate change is as real as it gets, hence, it becomes more of a moral duty than a choice to shift to electric or hybrid electric vehicles. With this, comes an opportunity of immense growth and innovation in the automotive sector.
Compared with gasoline or diesel-powered cars and trucks, electric vehicles also require special or seriously modified components, and out-of-the-ordinary mechanical and physical attention. This gives manufacturers more room to play and innovate with their products and introduce newer, better components that work best with range of electric automobiles.
So, this is my question to you, what do you think about an all-electric future? Will EVs provide as much satisfaction to petrolheads as gasoline cars do ? Or will EVs become yet another fad, only for the rich ?
